It’s Over

The filing of ITR is officially over. For us in the Assessment Division, that means we will go back to our “aquarium” and deal with our usual work.

Assisting taxpayers in filing their income tax return is a task I ( or shall I say we?) look forward to during filing season. I get the chance to meet compensation income earners who are filing their income tax returns. It’s always a nice experience talking to these people who come from different backgrounds. Never mind if the instructions as to filling in the forms and the explanations on the number qualified dependents that may be claimed or the status of their “refunds” are the same over and over again. But conversing with them is something enriching.

While some taxpayers are very submissive with our assessment, some are very adamant. They insist that their tax due is this as computed by whoever and not that. There are also where they question why the tax due is higher compared to a fellow when in fact both are earning the same salary grade. Well, with this kind of taxpayer, you have to soften more your voice and explain very carefully. You gotta stretch your patience or else you’ll get your butt kicked either by the taxpayer himself or your boss!

This task is also twice the fun if you are in a good company. For this season, our “bunso” was it! Not only was she energetic and bubbly but she went the extra mile in serving the taxpayers (or baka type lang ele con el taxpayer? Pwede!). This season, 90% of our taxfilers belong to the military service wherein dominated by man. When I came across with difficult taxpayer, I broke the ice by infusing that our “bunso” is single and she is looking for her soulmate. More often than not, the trick worked. Hehe! The “Senior Citizen” and the “Buddy and Sol” tandem (black version! peace!) also added spice to our group. Their constant “iringan” and “bangayan” were matchless. Really, there was never a dull moment with these guys around.

The advent of ITS allowed our group to bond with personnel from other division also. Before we accepted the income tax returns, the Taxpayer Identification Number must be verified if it was in the system already. Mimi and Juwell were there for this job. Working with them was fun especially during break time ( wow! Internet!) and snack time ( Yum yum! Makagana kome! Hehehe!). And speaking of snacks, that was another thing we looked forward to. It was over-flowing which made me forget my diet.

Anyway, it’s over! Back to usual work! Back to read-scan-and-search documents after documents that comprise a docket. Then compute and re-compute and re-compute again before making a memorandum report assuming it is necessary. Sigh! Back to old life.
