Papary Glands

“Papa, unsa ni?” (Papa, what is this?)

Asked my then 3 year old son while pointing at my nipples.

I was about to say dede (mammary glands in our local term) but decided not to. We refer dede to his feeding bottles as well… saying it will just confuse him. So I replied:

“Mammary Glands!”

He paused. Confusion all over his face. Then blurted out:

“DILI UY! (NO!!!!) PAPARY GLANDS!”

LOLl!! It turned out that he asked his Mama the same question days before. And he got the same answer. Since I am a Papa, it is but only proper that they be called papary glands!

What a logical mind!

Isang Tulog Na Lang

I just posted that line on facebook! That means I’m down to my last night. Yay!

Allow me to give you a little background first.

First week of October, wifey received an order from the National Office. She was tapped to become one of the trainors for the Middle Managers’ Course of the bureau. She was expecting that actually but didn’t think that she will do it at the national office. The engagement will last for one week. But she had to be there on Friday of the prior week for the briefing. Since our location is down south, she needed to take the flight a day before the briefing. Bottom line, she will be out for a total of 10 days.

10 days alone with two handful kids (1 year old and 4 years old) plus a demanding work. Whew! And now I’m down to my last night! Yay!

But still too early to celebrate. The battle is not over yet. I still have one last night.

Where’s your Kukuy?

One milestone common to all 14-month old toddlers is knowing at least one body part. It may be the eyes, nose, ears or mouth. But not my son. His is kukuy (local slang for male genitalia). And I’m sharing to you our “conversation” below.

Me: Zyk, touch your nose.
Zyk: <Blank stare>
Me: Touch your ears.
Zyk: <No reaction…>
Me: Asa  imu (Where are your) eyes? ( I used his mother tongue in stead of English. )
Zyk: <Still no reaction…>
Me: Zyk, where’s your kukuy?
Zyk: <In an instant, he pointed at his crotch!>

My Little Chatterbox

Tatata… Hah… O o… Na… Dida… Gagig…

These are just few of the words commonly used by my little guy Zyk. When you talk to him, he answers back as if trying to make a conversation. And lately, he has his own little world. He will grab a few of his toys… bring them somewhere then sit down and play with them. He is also fond of pushing things around. His usual victim is the chair of his Kuya Ryx. Yeah I know we were supposed to buy him a toy with wheels which he can push around. But no need! His brother grew up fine without it!

Going back, his routine is to pull the chair, position it in a way that the back rest would touch the floor and the legs of the chair pointing towards him. He will now hold the two ends of the legs then starts pushing. It’s fun for the first few rounds! But not the succeeding rounds. It’s tiring! Believe me… little kids have lots of energy compared to us.

For two straight Saturdays, we treated the entire family to an outdoor fun! First, a night-picnic at Paseo Del Mar. This in spite of the bad weather on the early part of the day. With pansit bihon and loaf bread as baon, we parked Chubi at the far side of the parking area (where there are no business establishments around). Ryx and Zyk enjoyed the breeze. We, the grown-ups composed of Eena, Dida, Jot and I enjoyed the scenery. Hehe! Lots of young couples around! So lovey-dovey with each other. Some went to the extent of making PDA! Good thing Ryx didn’t ask anything about it. Hehehe!

We were about to go home when we heard the announcement about the dancing musical fountain. This is one of the new attractions of the park. It was about to start in a short while, so we decided to wait for it. We transferred to a nearer parking slot so we can see the show (without the need to pay) without any obstruction in order to enjoy it.

5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

The show kicked off! It was nice… breathtaking… . Ryx was so amazed. Zyk was shocked! I don’t know what’s going on in his mind during that time. 🙂

For the 2nd Saturday, we brought the entire household (Yaya Pilar with son Edmark and sister Grace) to Mindpro Citimall. They watched the movie ICE AGE 4. They only… I and Zyk were left at the Kid’s Zone. Zyk’s not ready for movie house yet. He was better off at the playhouse. When we were there, he didn’t like it at first. But when another toddler came in, he started to have some fun.

Kid’s Zone is actually a barber shop cum beauty parlor cum play pen located at the third level of the mall. It’s the first here in our place, I think. Puede na. But I think they lack implements and advertisement. We had the opportunity actually of introducing to them the concept of gift certificate which they embraced and is now available. And I am sharing to you the story:

We were invited to a birthday party of an office mate’s grandson. They are well off so we don’t know what to give as birthday presents. We looked around and didn’t see anything fit for the baby. Until we came across the shop. We started inquiring and found the price reasonable and the services (based on observation only) okay. Sold out with the idea, we asked if they have gift certificates. THEY DON’T!!! Desperate already since we don’t have time, we asked the receptionist if we can talk to the owner and she gave us her number. After the call… the owner talked to the receptionist and then presto! our gift certificate is ready!!! 🙂

Ryx’s 4th Birthday

We took the day off from office work as usual. But for this birthday, we have an added chore. We have Ryx’s classmates (and yayas) to think of. We didnt think of inviting them over tot he house because they won’t sit well with Ryx’s friends from the neighborhood. So we just bought Selecta Ice Cream (Ube and Strawberry) with cones and Chocolate Marble Roll. They had them after the class. Teacher Kaye and her assistants also enjoyed the treat.

Almost lunchtime, somebody came knocking at our door with an Ube Cake and 12 Balloons on sticks. The cake was for the Basilan Folks while the balloons were for Ryx. They were actually from Ma’am Mila, Eena’s co-speaker. A few weeks ago, the two went to conduct a seminar in Basilan. They stayed in my parents house. As an act of appreciation, Ma’am Mila gave them an ube cake which actually happens to be the favorite of my mother.

While the cooks were busy with Spaghetti and Gulaman, I went to town to get the cakes – there were two, one by Venus and the other by Red Ribbons. The former was from US ( Papa, Mama, Zyk and Dida & Ate Pilar) while the latter was courtersy of Tita Gagah.

I arrived home from my trip with a few children already there waiting. Reena was already in panic-mode. She was so worried about the seating arrangement because we dont have enough chairs. Thanks to Pyong-pyong ( one of Ryx’s friends )! He brought around 3 long benches.

Our “dirty” ice cream also was on time. It actually took me a lot of driving and gallons of sweat and a few exchange of grrr words (with wifey) before I was able to locate him.

Around 4pm, when the invited guests were there , we started the party. We had a few games before they ate the food. Our tetra-pack JUICE were already icy cold when served. The rounds of ice cream in cones were so exciting since the kids were all in a frenzy making their way to Manong Sorbetero to have the cold treat.

The much awaited game was the pabitin. I segregated the kids according to size so that everybody has equal chance. Ryx was not exempted. He joined the kids and fortunately, he was able to get the desired prize. When it was the average-sized kids turn, I thought I would hear somebody crying or getting angry. Because the moment the pabitin was lowered down, everybody was jumping, pulling, pushing and scrambling. It even reached the point where you see kids one on top of another. Then nonchalantly stood up and brushed himself/herself off then walk away as if nothing happened. Too bad, I didn’t catch it on camera.

When the kids party was over, it was time for us to prepare for our dinner. We had fried chicken in addition to the ones mentioned. Mommy and Tita Gagah joined us with a gift in tow. Guess what? Its LOFTY. Now the series is complete – DUMP TRUCK, POWER MIXER and LOFTY.

Zyk joined the fun, too! He was there avidly observing the kids all throughout!

Sandwiched

Wifey and I arrived home very very late last night – Wifey worked overtime while I came from school. We got stranded somewhere in town because of the rain. Well, we didn’t use Chubi because the sun was bright early in the morning and there was no indication that it will rain.

When we arrived home past 10pm, Ryx was already asleep while Zyk was still wide awake. According to Dida, Zyk went to bed earlier. Maybe he was not contented not to see us before going to Neverland that’s why he woke up before we arrived home. Few minutes after, Wifey and I were ready for bed. Zyk was showing signs that he was sleepy as well. So we went inside the room.

(Pre-Zyk days, we have one maternity bed in our room. When Ryx became 3 years old, we needed an extra bed since our old bed can no longer accommodate us. The new single-sized bed was placed beside the old one since Ryx was not ready yet to sleep apart from us. When Zyk was born, we rearranged our beds in such a way that one side [apart from the headboard] is against the wall. That way, the chances of kids falling off the bed would be slim. The downside of this setup is there’s a one-inch gap between the two mattresses whiche we termed as the Suez Canal! Hehe!)

Ryx was already sleeping in his usual place which is the side adjacent to the wall. My usual place is on the other end parallel to Ryx while Zyk would stay in between me and wifey. That night, after putting all my efforts Zyk finally fell asleep (putting him to sleep is struggle lately because we are training him to sleep on the bed on his own instead of carrying him) he was occupying wifey’s bed space already. Left without a choice, wifey, who was dog tired due to her overtime work at the office,  took Zyk’s place. In effect, they ended up exchanging places.

After putting Zyk to sleep, I lost the urge so I took the book I’m currently reading and started  flipping the pages.

When it was my time to join them, wifey took my space already. I have no choice but to stay in between wifey and Zyk. While there, I could not go to sleep. Maybe it was because of the new position… or maybe it was my subconscious telling me that our position is not right. It’s kinda dangerous to leave Ryx and Zyk side by side you know. Ryx might end up on top of Zyk. I transferred and stayed in between my boys.

Never mind the discomfort brought about by the Suez Canal… but being SANDWICHED by my two kids is a perfect bliss!!! How I wish wifey was awake so she can take pictures.
